The nearest available water sources for some of the tribal hamlets (Sorandai, Koodapatti, Sirukinaru, Thondai, Poochamarathur) in Anaikatti Hills, Coimbatore District are located at least 2 – 3 Km away from their dwellings. The native women undergo a great deal of toil spending hours to fetch water for their daily requirements. To end this drudgery, solar powered water pumping systems were installed in these tribal villages. This initiative has benefitted about 300 people (nearly 60 families) and has improved their socio-economic conditions. Apart from using the water for household purposes, the surplus water is used for irrigating their backyard garden where banana, tapioca, vegetables, medicinal plants etc. are cultivated, rendering them the source of additional income.
